Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou Day Tour
The Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou not too far from Ouarzazate is probably one of the most popular Marrakech day trips. Indeed, this gem is considered “the gates of the Atlas”. The town is therefore a perfect starting point for a ride (by camel for example) in the High Atlas. With its dramatic walls of red earth, slit windows and crumbling towers, it is a magnificent example of a traditional stronghold. Chosen as a location for Hollywood films such as Lawrence of Arabia, Jewel in the Nile, and more recently Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, Gladiator, and Game of Thrones, Ait Ben Haddou sits upon a lofty pinnacle of rock overlooking a river. Dating from around the 15th century, its importance as a trading post gradually waned, and today’s inhabitants eke a living from farming… and as film extras!
But Ouarzazate is also a major filming location. To discover this facet of the city, head to Atlas Studios, film studios popularized in the 1990s and 2000s. Masterpieces such as The Mummy, Gladiator, Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra or Games of Thrones have all come to shoot scenes in the Moroccan heights.
Finally, end with a more authentic Ouarzazate, walking through the souks. Between spice stalls and artisanal products, you can immortalize your passage with a little souvenir.
